There are 4 main attributes that set Biodesign apart.

Biodesign communicates with the body, signaling surrounding tissue to grow across the scaffold, allowing the body to restore itself.

Growth Factors and Proteins Key to Signaling

The processing of Biodesign carefully maintains inherent growth factors and glycoproteins that give it the unique ability to signal the body to restore itself. Many other biologic grafts are processed in a way that removes noncollagen elements, limiting the graft's signaling ability.

Once Biodesign is implanted in the body, growth factors and proteins augment the body's natural response to begin healing. When new cells begin to infiltrate the scaffold, signaling factors such as glycosaminoglycans and glycoproteins help guide the cells toward remodeling.

Moderate Cost
Biodesign is priced moderately compared to the high cost of other biologic grafts, and is often priced comparably to synthetic mesh.

Widespread Availability
Biodesign is widely available and is terminally sterilized.

Variety of Shapes and Sizes
Biodesign is available in a variety of shapes and sizes designed specifically to fit the patient's anatomy for common tissue repairs. It's also available in flat sheets that can be cut to a shape and size for a specific procedure.

Ready to Use
Biodesign can be stored at room temperature and has shelf life of 18 months. It requires minimal preparation, with a short rehydration time.

Biodesign remodels into fully vascularized tissue, allowing the body's own defense mechanisms to reach and respond to infection. This ability to remodel provides the basis for infection resistance.

Five year data supports the use of Biodesign for hernia repair in contaminated or potentially contaminated fields. Additionally, a recently published meta-analysis shows that use in clean fields offers even more success.

Biodesign completely remodels into strong, fully vascularized tissue. Once the healing process is complete, Biodesign is undetectable—providing a permanent repair without a permanent material.

View the progression of remodeling in these images. Initial placement of the graft is shown first, and in the next three images, the graft is gradually replaced by vascularized tissue.

Over time, Biodesign remodels to become as strong as the patient's own tissue. Dermis-based biologic grafts leave behind elastin, which can cause stretching over time. Synthetic mesh and chemically cross-linked biologic grafts can lead to scarring, erosion and encapsulation.

This graph illustrates how Biodesign repair maintains strength throughout the natural remodeling process. In fact, a repair made with Biodesign gets stronger over time and becomes stronger than the normal body wall.

Fewer Recurrences Than Competing Products

A recently published systematic review shows that failure rates for dermis-based biologic grafts used in hernia repair are as high as 14% at 12-14 month follow-up. At 19 month follow-up, hernia recurrence rates with Biodesign are only 6.7%.
